Day 12 Rome
St.
Peter's Basilica Catacombs Appian
Way
Early morning visit to St. Peter's Square and Basilica and
Grottos where we descend from the medieval upper
church to the sacred gravesite of St. Peter the Apostle, as
if we are traveling back in time.
Your guide will
bring to life this ancient place so you can imagine what it was like
to live in one of the most important places in history...two
thousand years ago. We
lead you down to the incredible ruins of the Roman and
Imperial Forums, about 30 feet below the current level of
the city, where you will learn about the ancient markets,
basilicas, and temples; see where the Senate was and where
the most important figures in ancient times spent their
days. Walk down the Via Sacra of the Imperial Forum once the
center of Roman power
where the Roman Senators met and worshipped
before entering the famed Colosseum.
Who
wouldn't be moved at visiting the sites where St. Peter was
crucified and St. Paul was beheaded, where St. John was cast
into boiling oil and where Peter asked of Christ "Lord,
whither goest Thou?"
on the Via Appia Antica where time
seems to have stood still since the days when Nero and Saint
Paul walked these roads.
Visit the
tomb of the Apostle St. Paul Outside the Walls,
driving along the Ancient Appian Way to the Catacombs where
thousands of early Christian names cover the marble slabs of
the loculi and and early representations of the carpenter
from Nazareth dating from the first thru fourth centuries AD
hidden nearly ninety feet below the ground.
The saints
who lived their lives in this holy city and walked its
streets – saints like Pope Gregory the Great, Sts. Francis
of Assisi and Ignatius Loyola - who kept the church turned
toward Christ. The legends of martyrs’ is dear to the heart
of the church.
